The opportunity

Every broken link is a visitor you can still reach.

Old bulletin links, mistyped addresses, moved sermon pages: every website has them. Most 404 pages say “not found” and stop there. Yours can kindly point people to the most important question in life.

  • Someone already came looking. A person who reaches a missing page was trying to find your church or ministry. That moment doesn't have to be a dead end.
  • A gentle question with clear choices. Visitors see a clean full-screen message with two clear choices: return home, or learn more.
  • Still a proper 404 for search engines. The page keeps a true HTTP 404 status and adds noindex, follow, so missing pages are handled correctly.

How it works

From a missing page to a meaningful conversation

Four simple steps, all on your own WordPress site.

  1. A visitor reaches a missing page

Instead of a bare error, they see a calm full-screen overlay: “Looks like you are lost. Do you know where you will go when you die?” They can return home or choose Learn More.

  2. They walk through “Know For Sure”

A short, step-by-step journey through the King James Bible: sin, its penalty, God's love, the only way, and how to respond. It works with the keyboard, honors reduced motion, and works without JavaScript.

  3. They can respond

An optional form lets visitors say they trusted Christ, ask questions, ask for prayer, or request contact.

  4. Your church follows up

Responses are saved on your own site with a follow-up status, and emailed to you through WordPress (wp_mail()).

For churches and ministries

Made to feel like your church, not like a plugin

Built by Paul Douglas for Digital Missions Display, LLC, to help churches minister to souls with clarity.

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Romans 10:13 KJV
  • Your look. Use your church logo or none, and pick a background color, image, or muted looping video for the 404 screen.
  • Your wording. Adjust the headline, journey title, and contact text in the settings.
  • A shareable Gospel page. The “Know For Sure” page is created for you; add it to your menu, or place [mcg404_gospel] on any page.
  • Simple follow-up. Mark responses as followed up, export them as CSV, and set how long to keep them.
  • Reliable email. Pair it with an SMTP plugin, then use Send Test Email to confirm notifications arrive.
  • Coming from KJV Gospel 404? Settings from the earlier plugin are copied on first activation (saved responses are not).

Privacy and data

Your visitors' trust stays on your site

Stored on your own site

When response storage is on, responses go into a dedicated table in your WordPress database. Nothing is sent to us.

Email only through WordPress

Notifications use wp_mail() and go to the recipients you set (or the site admin email). If an email fails, the response is still saved.

No tracking, no remote assets

The plugin contacts no external service, does not track visitors, and loads no remote fonts, scripts, or styles.

Credits off by default

No credits or external links are added to your public site unless you choose to turn them on.

IP addresses are stored only if you turn that option on (off by default). You can set a retention period, and the plugin works with the WordPress personal-data export and erasure tools. This website itself uses no cookies, analytics, or third-party scripts.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does the 404 page still return a 404 status?

Yes. The page sends a real HTTP 404 status and a noindex, follow robots tag so search engines handle missing pages correctly.

Can I show the Gospel journey on a normal page?

Yes. Activation creates a published “Know For Sure” page. You can also add the [mcg404_gospel] shortcode to any page.

How are notification emails sent?

Only through the WordPress mail pipeline (wp_mail()). The plugin never sends mail directly from the server, so it works with SMTP plugins such as WP Mail SMTP. For reliable delivery, use an SMTP plugin, then use Mail > Send Test Email and the mail diagnostics on the Mail tab to confirm that notifications arrive. If an email cannot be sent, the response is still saved (when response storage is on).

Where are visitor responses stored?

In a dedicated table in your WordPress database, when response storage is on. You can export them as CSV, set a retention period, and use the WordPress personal-data tools.

How do I show a Bible resources link?

On the Journey tab, enter the heading, wording, button text, and link (Resource URL) for the resource you want to recommend. Then tick “Check here to activate the Fundamental Baptist Books credit” in the Ministry credits box on the Branding tab. The section appears only when the box is ticked and a link is entered.

What happens when I delete the plugin?

The scheduled cleanup task is always removed. Settings, the responses table, and the automatically created page are deleted only if you turn on “Uninstall cleanup” in the Advanced tab.

I used the earlier “KJV Gospel 404” plugin. Are my settings kept?

On first activation, the plugin copies settings from the earlier plugin if it finds them. Saved responses from the earlier plugin are not copied.

Does it cost anything?

No. MissionaryConnect Gospel 404 is free and licensed under the GPLv2 or later. It requires WordPress 6.2 or newer and PHP 7.4 or newer.
